Well, another few days without getting in or on the water at all. I dont know what it is this year about the surf and sand but it just hasn't appealed to me like normal.
We did get out in the boat last Sunday and managed one heck of an adventure from Trails End to New River Inlet and back with the dogs. We layed over for an hour or two as well in Masons inlet after it looked like the storms that had formed were going to fizzle.
I also got the boat in the water on Friday and made way for the liberty ship again, 3 miles off of Wrightsville Beach. Water from the inlet was moving North with the South wind so suffice to say that the diving was going to be very limited. I turned around and came back in.
I often mentione the Lib Ship as a spot I go regulary as I'm most often diving solo and although it's not the best dive in the ocean, it is a great place to spearfish...close.
I do understand though that drum and pompano continue to be caught on the North End of Wrightsville as well as by the few people who venture over to Masonboro Island.
I've also heard that the founder bite in the river is still good. Confirming that was a report from one of the guys I work with. He and another firefighter were fishing the other day in the river and in addition to their limits, two fish were over 7 pounds.
About four years ago, we had similar conditions during the summer when drout was an issue. When this occurs, it seems like there is better fishing up the river where the salt water seems to move further up. That summer, I had a phenominal year in the Nuese River tagging drum, and the specks chomped for weeks in the river.
Speaking of the Nuese, early reports indicate that the tarpon bite is as good as ever. It won't be long before the drum are caught there too.
