The one that got away.

Made way out to the five mile this morning and hooked up to the barge in 50 feet of relatively blue water. Wasn't sure how good the viz was gonna be or how the spearfishing was gonna go either. Viz was good. Maybe fifty feet or so. Couldn't quite see the boat from the bottom.

First time I've dove this wreck this year. I usually like to hit it quite a bit but have just layed off of it.
The first dive had the best viz. I made my way around pretty much all the way around it and all over it on the bottom. I only saw three flounder, with only one big enough to kill. Plenty of sheepshead and one of the biggest schools of spadefish Ive ever seen with plenty of big spades. I left them alone too. Missed one nice taug that was little deeper in the wreck for a pole spear.

On the second dive, viz was a getting worse. I dropped my gun down the anchor line to wait for my arrival and also took the pole spear.

Once on the bottom, i made an entry into he wreck to see if there were any flounder around tucked deep inside. I was amazed at the nice sand covering the bottom inside. However I usually find that nice sand has no flounder.

After coming out the other side and making my way back by my anchor line, something big moved by my left side. When I turned to look, a huge cobia was moving past. I made quick kicks back to the gun and loaded it. I was sure I would see that big boy again. I estimated him at 100 lbs. I moved back to where I saw him before. After a minute he swam by again, only further away. I was sure I could get a shot at him even at twenty feet but in that split second I thought I could only get the tail shot. He'd a drug me all over the bottom with that shot, and he would have most likely pulled the shaft.

If I would have had the gun ready to begin with, I would have had it in the gill plate. But for the time being, He'll just have to be the one that got away.
